Last update: September 11, 2012
Visitors to Stockholm this summer paid more to stay overnight than visitors anywhere else in Europe. A new survey from CheapHotels.org has revealed that the Swedish capital was the most expensive European destination in terms of hotel prices. The survey specifically looked at the lodging rates of 30 main European destinations throughout the summer period spanning June to August 2012.
The cost of each locale’s cheapest available double room (minimum: 2-star hotel) was compared in order to create the rankings. As a result, the listed prices reflect the minimum amount travelers had to spend to stay overnight in the 30 European locations examined by the survey.
At a price tag of 111 Euros for the cheapest available hotel room, Stockholm visitors paid more than any other summer 2012 travelers. But Edinburgh, Scotland and Venice, Italy weren’t far behind. These second- and third-place finishers both came in at an average of over 100 Euros nightly, at 109 Euros and 103 Euros respectively for their cheapest available hotel rooms.
The best summer bargains went to Athens, Greece visitors. In the Greek capital, hotel rooms on average went for only 23 Euros per night. On a more surprising note, summertime hotel deals were also prevalent in the German, Italian and Spanish capitals of Berlin, Rome and Madrid. At less than 50 Euros per night, these popular destinations appeared at the bottom of the rankings.
