The most expensive destinations for Presidents' Day Weekend 2016

February 8, 2016

The ski resort of Aspen, Colorado has taken the number one spot on a new survey from CheapHotels.org. Staying in this Rocky Mountains destination will cost guests more this year's Presidents' Day weekend than anywhere else in the United States.

In coming up with the rankings, CheapHotels.org established the hotel rates for all the major U.S. destinations. The comparative timeframe consisted of the three-day weekend spanning February 12 to February 15 (Presidents' Day).

To spend the long holiday weekend in Aspen, an overnight guest will have to pay $533 per night. And that rate is for the most affordable double room (with at least a two-star rating). No other destination in the country is boasting a higher rate. CheapHotels.org’s spokesperson, Barbara Adams, mentions that the rates the survey shows were established in late January. As a result, travelers who have yet to book a room can anticipate having to pay an even higher rate. That is because in the interim, Aspen has virtually sold out its hotel rooms.

In the survey’s runners-up spots are two Hawaiian destinations: Poipu, located on the southern side of the island of Kauai and Lahaina, situated in West Maui. Daily rates of $512 and $463, respectively, put these island locales in the second and third slots. With Vail ($419) and Breckenridge ($412) coming in fourth and fifth most expensive, two more ski resorts in Colorado landed in the Top 5.

About the Methodology

The survey considered all destinations in the USA boasting a minimum of 20 hotels. Only well-located hotels (city center, close to beach or near ski lifts) rated at least 2 stars and with positive overall average client ratings have been considered. Rates were established on January 28–29, 2016 based on research conducted on the hotel comparison website Kayak.
