HOTEL SAVOY, Hamburg

The hotel sits on a street lined with kebab shops and small eateries, within a 5-minute walk of Hamburg Central Station. The station connects to the S-Bahn, U-Bahn and long-distance trains, making it easy to reach the city centre, the Reeperbahn and the Elbphilharmonie within 10-15 minutes on foot or by public transport. The immediate area is busy and ethnically diverse, with a strong Middle Eastern character, and can feel intimidating at night due to crowds of people lingering on the streets. A cinema is located next door, and a Penny supermarket and several small groceries are within a short walk. Families with young children or solo travellers who plan to return late may prefer to use the main road rather than the side street that leads directly to the hotel. The surrounding streets are also home to a concentration of Turkish restaurants, with at least eight dining options within 300 metres of the front door.

Rooms are small but practical, each with soundproof walls, carpeted flooring, heating, a flat-screen TV, a telephone, a desk and a wardrobe. The private bathrooms include a shower, hairdryer and free toiletries. A cot and a safe deposit box are available on request. Rooms at the back of the building overlook a quiet courtyard, while front-facing rooms are exposed to street noise; opening the window for ventilation in summer brings in that noise directly, as there is no air conditioning. The double rooms have two single beds rather than a double, the triple rooms contain three single beds, and the quadruple rooms have two single beds. Bed lengths are shorter than standard European adult beds - travellers over 185 cm may find them cramped. Housekeeping is done daily at no extra charge. The lift is very small (fits one person with light luggage) and does not reach the attic rooms; guests staying in the attic will need to climb narrow stairs with their bags.

There are no on-site wellness or leisure amenities. The hotel is compact and functional, focused on providing a clean room and breakfast. Guests seeking fitness facilities, a pool, or relaxation areas will need to use external venues or plan activities outside the hotel. A small park with a children's playground and a cafe is located a short walk away, offering a rare green space in the immediate area.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, though it can be slow or unstable in some rooms. The 24-hour reception provides express check-in/out, a tour desk, an ATM, and luggage storage at no extra charge. Safety deposit boxes are available for an additional fee, and the hotel has 24-hour security with CCTV, smoke alarms and key access. A vending machine offers drinks, and there is a small minimarket onsite. Underground parking is available for a daily fee of around 15 EUR, but the ramp is narrow and the garage itself is aged, dirty and unappealing - it is best suited for small cars. The lift is tiny and may not be comfortable for those with claustrophobia. Daily housekeeping is included, but guests should hang the 'do not disturb' sign if they do not wish to be disturbed before 09:00.
