EASTGATE TOWER, New York

The hotel sits between 2nd and 3rd Avenues on 39th Street in the safe, residential Murray Hill neighbourhood. Grand Central Terminal is about 5 blocks away, providing direct subway connections across the city and the Newark Airport Express bus stop within a short walk. The UN Headquarters is a 5-6-minute walk. The 2nd Avenue & East 39th Street bus stop is a 5-minute walk. The area feels safe even late at night and is within easy walking distance of the Chrysler Building, Bryant Park, 5th Avenue shopping and many Broadway theatres. On-site parking is available at US$45 per day, though the hotel recommends walking or using the subway for most sightseeing.

Rooms are available from studio suites to two-bedroom suites. Many suites have a separate living area with a sofa bed, a dining table and chairs, and a full kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster and basic cookware and tableware. Bathrooms are small but include a bathtub or shower; some suites have 11/2 or 2 bathrooms. The decor is noticeably dated with worn furniture and small scuffs, but all rooms are kept very clean. Higher-floor rooms on the 10th floor and above are quieter and offer better views (some rooms overlook the Empire State Building). Rooms at the back of the hotel are very quiet, with no street noise. The air conditioning and heating work well, though the A/C unit can be noisy. Beds are consistently described as comfortable, often with mattress toppers. Storage is ample with walk-in closets in many suites. Daily housekeeping is provided, including washing dishes and changing towels and sheets.

The hotel's own restaurant, Tempura Matsui, serves Japanese and Asian cuisine. Room service from a nearby diner is also available - breakfast can be delivered to the room quickly. The surrounding neighbourhood offers many dining options: The Frontier (diner-style breakfast) is half a block away; Scotty's Diner (24-hour, on Lex) is a short walk; and Bloom's Deli on 40th Street is popular for breakfast. Shake Shack, City Beer and several other restaurants are within 0.5 km. A McDonald's is on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 39th Street, open late. The full kitchen in each room allows guests to prepare their own meals, which can save money; grocery stores and convenience shops are nearby on 3rd Avenue and at D'Agastino.

The hotel operates a 24-hour front desk with helpful and professional staff. A concierge is available to provide dining and transport recommendations. Luggage storage is offered - useful for late flights after checkout. Laundry service is available, as is room service. A safety deposit box is provided for valuables. Business services include fax/photocopying. A paid shuttle service runs to/from airports; a town car to JFK can be arranged at a flat rate. The fitness centre and spa centre are available. The hotel is wheelchair accessible, with facilities for disabled guests, including lifts. Non-smoking rooms are available.
