HOTEL CHALLIS POTTS POINT, Sydney

The hotel sits on leafy Challis Avenue, a 12-minute walk from Kings Cross train station and with a bus stop two minutes away providing direct routes to the city centre. The neighbourhood is known for its many restaurants, cafes and bars, all within a few blocks. Hyde Park Barracks Museum is 16 minutes on foot, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is 1 km away, and the walk to Circular Quay takes about 30 minutes. Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is 12 km from the hotel; the most practical transfer is by train to Central Station then to Kings Cross, or by Uber.

The Premium King with Balcony is the only room type with an opening window and outdoor space; it overlooks Challis Avenue and has ceiling-high glass doors, a seating area, fridge and en suite bathroom. All other rooms are significantly smaller and often have frosted or no windows, making them feel dark and claustrophobic. Standard double, twin, queen and small double rooms feature air conditioning, a private bathroom with walk-in shower, tea and coffee maker, hairdryer, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, and heating. Many rooms have limited storage - no wardrobes, only a few hangers - and no space to open luggage on the floor. Road-facing rooms can be noisy; rear rooms may be affected by a school or rain noise. Ground-floor rooms and those with internal outlooks can feel like a basement. Bathrooms are compact with walk-in showers; rooms have no bathtub. Linens and towels are old and thin. The building has a lift.

There is no restaurant or food service at Hotel Challis. In-room tea and coffee sachets with a kettle are provided, and the shared lounge has free coffee and tea available during the day. The surrounding streets of Potts Point are filled with restaurants, cafes and bars within a 5-minute walk, including Monopole, Macleay Street Bistro, The Fish Shop, Yellow, La Bomba, Brass, Melo's Italian and Harry's Cafe de Wheels, all within 0.5 km. The neighbourhood also has a supermarket for self-catering.

The hotel has a small garden and outdoor terrace with furniture, ideal for relaxing with a coffee. There is no swimming pool, spa, wellness centre or fitness room on the property. Boating is available in the surrounding area, and the Royal Botanic Gardens are a 17-minute walk away.
