LA MODERN HOSTEL, Los Angeles

The hostel sits in a quiet residential part of Los Angeles. Taqueria Los Anaya and Ondal 2 are each within a 1 km walk, providing basic dining options. The area is safe enough for walking during the day, but the lack of on-site social spaces means guests may congregate on the sidewalk outside the gate, which has caused some local tension. Without internet access, navigating the city requires pre-downloaded maps or offline planning. The neighbourhood is pleasant, but the property's exterior appearance (overgrown vegetation, cigarette butts) detracts from the surroundings.

Rooms are dormitory-style with multiple bunk beds (often 8 per room despite some listings stating 6). The rooms are small - approximately 4x4 metres - leaving very limited space for guests and luggage. Each room has a private bathroom, but cleanliness is a persistent problem: bathrooms are rarely cleaned, bathmats can develop black mould, and toilet paper is usually only supplied once in the morning and runs out quickly. Bunk beds are short and uncomfortable, with some railings partly broken. Air conditioning and heating are available, but the kitchen lacks sufficient pots, pans, utensils, and dishes. Smoke detectors have been known to beep continuously for days because their batteries were disconnected without fixing the hard-wired system, posing a safety hazard. The dormitory layout means noise from late-night arrivals and early risers is common. Guests seeking a private, quiet, or reliably clean room should look elsewhere.

The hostel provides a shared kitchen with a stove (currently broken), a refrigerator, a microwave, and a few basic items like a small pot and a knife that doesn't cut well. The kitchen is often dirty, with mould and residue in the sink, and there are very few dishes, cups, or utensils available. No seating area is provided to eat, only a few hard plastic chairs. Guests planning to cook should bring their own cookware and expect to wash everything before use. Taqueria Los Anaya (1 km) and Ondal 2 (1 km) offer simple meals. Because the kitchen is unreliable and the property has no on-site restaurant or bar, most guests will rely on takeaway or eating out.
