The immediate area is the Tenderloin, where street homelessness, drug activity, and noise are visible throughout the day and intensify at night; walking after dark is not recommended. By day the location is well connected: Market Street is 3-4 blocks away, Union Square is within walking distance, the Great American Music Hall is nearby, and the Civic Center business district surrounds the property. Powell Station is about 10 minutes on foot, bus 19 stops at the door for direct routes to Fisherman's Wharf, and Golden Gate Transit coaches to Wine Country, Marin County, and the Golden Gate Bridge stop nearby. A cinema is about a block away and a brew pub is next door.

Some rooms are spacious and have been refreshed with laminate flooring, while others remain dated, with worn bedding, limited lighting, and bathroom fixtures in poor repair. Water leaks and drainage problems have occurred. Air conditioning is not universal and heating performance has been inconsistent. Each room has a flat-screen TV, an AM/FM alarm clock, and free in-room Wi-Fi; channel selection is limited and Wi-Fi strength can be inconsistent. Some rooms include a microwave and refrigerator, while others do not. Towels are provided but can be thin, and washcloths, hand towels, and hair dryers are not consistently available. Sound insulation is limited, so corridor and street noise can carry into the room.

On-site food service consists of breakfast and a drinks vending machine. Within roughly 0.5 km, dining choices include Zen Yai Thai, Lers Ros Thai, Thai Stick, Thai 4 You, Them Ky, Hai KY Mi Gia, Ping Yang Thai Grill and Dessert, and The Chairman Truck. A bakery across the street serves coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches, a brew pub is next door, Polk Street has additional restaurants a short walk away, and a KFC is about one block from the property.

Free Wi-Fi is available in rooms, though connection quality has varied. On-site parking is free and requires no reservation, but the lot is smaller than the number of rooms; keep valuables out of parked vehicles. The 24-hour front desk provides concierge service, luggage storage, and a tour desk where hop-on hop-off tour tickets can be purchased. An airport shuttle is available for an additional charge. The building has a lift and wheelchair access, although lift outages have required stair access to upper floors. Non-smoking rooms and family rooms are available. If you do not want housekeeping, state this at the front desk in person rather than relying on a door sign.
