About the Hotel

85 Whitechapel High Street Upper Floor ( Entrance On Side Alley), London, E1 7QX-
Close to the Tower of London

Hotel Details

Location

Zone 1 location, 3 minutes from Aldgate East tube station, with Tower Bridge and Brick Lane within walking distance.
Aldgate East station is less than 3 minutes on foot, placing most central London destinations within a 30-minute tube ride. Liverpool Street station is 1 km away, giving direct rail access to Stansted Airport. The Tower of London is an 18-minute walk, Tower Bridge 19 minutes, and Brick Lane 8 minutes. The surrounding area is dense with restaurants, cafés, and supermarkets, particularly along Whitechapel Road and around Aldgate. London City Airport is 10 km away - a 30-minute drive or tube-and-DLR journey. The alleyway leading to the guesthouse entrance is the primary access route; it is not a public throughway and is a known gathering point for rough sleepers and drug users, particularly after dark. Solo travellers, women, and families may find the alley intimidating, and the main gate lock is often broken, meaning anyone can enter the building. For daytime exploration the location is excellent; for returning late at night, factor in the nature of the access route.

Accommodation

Compact, no-frills rooms with essential self-catering appliances - kettle, fridge, microwave - and either a private or shared bathroom.
Room types include double rooms (1 bed, shared bathroom), twin/double rooms (2 beds, private or shared bathroom), family rooms (6 bunk beds, private bathroom), and quadruple rooms (4 bunk beds, shared or private bathroom). Bed sizes are generally narrow bunks, and several bunk beds are not attached to the walls, causing significant wobble. All rooms include a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee facilities, a dining table, a refrigerator, and an electric kettle. Some rooms also have a microwave. The property has no communal lounge - the foyer area is used for laundry storage and is not furnished for guest use. Air conditioning is not available; heating is provided but windows in many rooms cannot be opened fully because bunks block them, making rooms very hot. Road-facing rooms can be very noisy with sirens and street activity throughout the night. Private bathrooms are small but functional; shared bathrooms consist of one toilet and one shower serving all rooms on the floor, which can create long queues. Cleanliness upon arrival is inconsistent - some guests report clean rooms and fresh linens, while others report stained sheets, dirty towels, and mould in bathrooms. Bed bugs have been found in several rooms across multiple stays, including visible infestations in bed frames and mattresses. Guests choosing this property should view it strictly as a budget crash pad for sleeping only, not as a space for relaxing or spending daytime hours.

Dining

No restaurant or bar on site; each room has a kettle and fridge for self-catering, and dozens of eateries are within a 3-minute walk.
The property does not offer breakfast, a restaurant, or a bar. All rooms include tea and coffee making facilities, and some rooms have a microwave, allowing basic self-catering. Within a 300-metre radius there are at least eight dining options: Dulce Cafe, Big Moe's Diner, Sushinoen, Yuu Kitchen, Townsend, The Whitechapel Refectory, and Exmouth Coffee Company, plus Love in a Cup and several supermarkets for supplies. Guests who want a cooked breakfast or a sit-down dinner need to eat out - there is no alternative on site. For budget-conscious travellers, the ability to prepare simple meals in the room using the fridge and microwave is a practical advantage, reducing the need to eat out for every meal.
