BONDI BEACH BACKPACKERS, Sydney

Bondi Beach is 120 metres on foot, making early swims and sunset walks effortless. The 333 and 380 buses (corner of Campbell and Hall streets) run directly to Bondi Junction, Paddington, Circular Quay, The Rocks and the Opera House. For Edgecliff, Kings Cross, Martin Place, Townhall or Central Station, take the bus to Bondi Junction and switch to the train. Ferries from Circular Quay reach Watsons Bay, Rose Bay and Manly. Bondi Junction's shops are under 10 minutes' drive; Kings Cross, Paddington, the Football Stadium and Centennial Park are all within 15 minutes. Sydney Airport is 25 minutes by shuttle bus or public transport. Free public street parking is available about 4 minutes' drive away (8-10 minutes' walk back), with a 15-minute grace period on the meter for pickup and bag drop.

Rooms are mixed dorms (4-12 beds), female-only dorms (4-10 beds), and private rooms with 2-4 beds. All rooms have air conditioning and carpeted floors. There are no private en-suite bathrooms - each gender has shared bathroom facilities with 2 toilets, 2 sinks and 3 showers, cleaned twice daily. Beds are single bunks; top bunks have no ladder, power socket or shelf. Storage consists of a tray under the bed and a small personal locker; there are no full-size lockers. Bedding (sheets, pillowcase, doona cover, fitted sheet) is provided; towels are available to rent or buy. No heaters in rooms for safety reasons; extra doonas and pillows are available. The hostel does not have ground-floor rooms; all bedrooms are on the upper floor accessed by stairs. Road-facing rooms can be subject to street noise.

Breakfast (cook-yourself) offers two options: 2 eggs, 1 sausage, 2 toast with unlimited tea and coffee for $3.00; or 3 eggs, 2 toast with unlimited tea and coffee for $4.00. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, a home-cooked dinner (spaghetti bolognaise or chilli con carne) is available for $4.00. Free rice and pasta are always available to cook yourself. Tea, coffee and sugar are free 24/7. There are no on-site restaurants; several cafés and restaurants are within 0.5 km (Gusto, Pompei's, Gertrude & Alice, China Diner). Vending machines sell drinks and snacks. A small kitchen with one toaster and kettle serves the whole hostel; communal fridge space is adequate.

The hostel provides free hire of surfboards, bodyboards, snorkels and skateboards - a surfboard requires a $50.00 cash deposit. There is a small communal garden with picnic tables, a sun terrace and a BBQ area for socialising. Inside, a lounge/TV room with satellite channels, table tennis and board games offers relaxation. The hostel's events team runs evening entertainment such as karaoke, live music, theme nights and night-outs at local venues. Wine nights occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A public bath is available for an additional charge. Nearby paid activities include horse riding, canoeing, fishing, hiking, golf (within 3 km), and a water park. Beach yoga or surf lessons can be arranged through the tour desk.

Wi-Fi is free and super-fast with no time or data limit. The shared kitchen is fully equipped; the hostel washes all plates, bowls, cups and cutlery (guests must clean pots, pans and sharp knives). Luggage storage is free during the stay; overnight or long-term storage costs $8 per item per night. Laundry services are available for an additional fee. A tour desk provides city tours, surf lessons and 12 one-day Sydney guides plus 4 one-day driver guides and 10 road-trip guides. Daily housekeeping is free. Safety deposit boxes, CCTV, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are on site. The property is not wheelchair accessible. Pets are not allowed. Shuttle and airport transfers are available for an additional charge (private, request after booking). Public transport tickets can be arranged at the desk. Currency exchange is provided.
