GOWANUS INN & YARD, New York

The hotel is within a five-minute walk of the Union Street station, offering a direct connection to Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, and Times Square without transfers. The neighbourhood is evolving, with numerous takeout spots, delis, and bagel shops within a few blocks, plus a Starbucks around the corner. While some side streets are quiet, 4th Avenue carries traffic and night-time noise from the street-level bar opposite. The immediate area is not a nightlife hub, but a five-minute walk to 5th Avenue in Park Slope provides many cafes and restaurants. For longer stays, the Barclays Center and Atlantic Terminal are a 15-minute walk, with additional subway connections.

Rooms are notably small, particularly the standard double, with limited surface space and floor area that makes unpacking two large suitcases challenging. Storage is provided by a pull-out drawer beneath the platform bed. Each room features a comfortable bed, a flat-screen TV with cable and satellite channels, air conditioning, and parquet floors. The bathroom contains a small shower with no curtain or screen, causing water to spread across the floor after use. The sink is located in the main room, not the bathroom, and the shelf above it is low, making it awkward for washing the face or teeth. Sound insulation between rooms is poor; movement, conversation, and TV noise from adjacent rooms can be heard. Windows can be opened slightly, but rooms facing the street may pick up noise from traffic and the bar. Rooms on the 4th floor have been noted as quieter. Most rooms have no mini-fridge, microwave, or coffee maker.

The hotel does not operate a breakfast service or a restaurant, but a 24/7 self-service coffee and tea station is in the lobby, allowing guests to prepare a hot drink to start the day. For meals, the immediate area offers a bagel shop across the street (popular for breakfast and lunch), a Dinosaur BBQ opposite for dinner, and several delis, pizzerias, and takeout spots within a two-minute walk. A short five-to-ten-minute walk to 5th Avenue in Park Slope reveals many sit-down restaurants and cafes. The nearest sit-down Italian is Al Di La Trattoria, a ten-minute walk. For those willing to venture, the Atlantic Terminal area (15 minutes on foot) has a food court and casual chains.

The hotel does not have its own wellness facilities. Instead, staff at the 24-hour front desk can provide day passes to a gym located directly across the road, allowing guests to use the equipment at a reduced rate. The shared lounge/TV area on the ground floor provides a space for relaxation, with free coffee and tea available. For outdoor leisure, the nearby Prospect Park (a 15-minute walk or short subway ride) is the closest large green space, while the Gowanus Canal area offers an urban walking route. No other on-site wellness amenities are available.

The front desk is open 24 hours and can assist with express check-in/out, private check-in/out, and concierge services. Luggage storage is available free of charge before check-in or after check-out. Daily housekeeping is included and free of charge. Free Wi-Fi covers all areas and is consistently noted as reliable. A lift serves all floors, and the property is wheelchair accessible, with grab rails in the toilet and a step-free entrance. A minimarket on site stocks essentials. The ground-floor shared lounge has a TV. Business facilities include a free business centre. Safety features include CCTV, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and key-card access. The hotel is non-smoking throughout; violation may incur a fee. No on-site parking; free street parking is possible but unreservable and may require circling for a space during busy times. Laundry is not available on site.
