While practical for transit-dependent travellers, the streets can feel less safe late at night due to loitering and street vendors. Walking to major sites like the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain takes 20-25 minutes.

Accommodation varies widely. Rooms are generally old: some have adequate space for luggage, others are so small there is no floor area to open a suitcase. Bedding is usually a double bed (often two pushed-together singles) with firm mattresses. Air conditioning is present but many units are old, noisy, and prone to leaking condensation. The lift is very small - only fits two people - and does not reach the ground floor, so guests with heavy luggage or a pushchair face stairs. Bathrooms are a weak point: mold on walls and ceilings, broken shower heads or brackets, blocked drains causing floor flooding, loose toilet seats, and damaged door handles are typical. Housekeeping is minimal - towels are changed, but soap and shampoo are not always replaced, and deeper cleaning (dust, mold) is rarely done.
