MARINA INN AND SUITES-AIRPORT-GASLAMP-ZOO, San Diego

The location is one of the strongest practical advantages. Across the street from the marina and a short walk to the San Diego waterfront, the hotel is also steps from the buzzing Little Italy neighbourhood, with dozens of restaurants and bars along India Street. The Gaslamp Quarter is a 25-minute walk or a quick drive, and the San Diego Zoo is about 10 minutes by car. The airport is very close, and the Santa Fe Depot (train and tram) is a short walk. Free on-site parking is available, but spots are extremely limited, so arriving early is recommended. The property sits right on a busy intersection and near train tracks and the flight path, so noise from traffic, trains and aircraft is constant during the day and early morning. Earplugs are provided.

The rooms are classic motel-style with walk-up doors and a straightforward layout. Beds are consistently reported as comfortable and linens as fresh. The bathrooms are a significant weakness: they are very small in many rooms, with low shower heads, cracked tiles and shower floors, inconsistent water pressure, and an overall outdated feel. Some rooms have a kitchenette with a stove but no fridge or cooking utensils. Noise is a major factor - walls and doors are thin, and the location on a busy corner means street noise, train rumble, and aircraft overhead are easily heard, especially in street-facing rooms. Air conditioning units are old and in some cases non-functional. Some rooms have been partially updated, but the overall condition of the motel is tired and run-down.
