Hotel Details

Location

Oak Hostel Zen sits on a quiet side street, a 5-minute walk from JR Uguisudani Station on the Yamanote Line - one stop from Ueno and directly connected to central Tokyo.
The hostel is a 5-10 minute walk from both JR Uguisudani Station (Yamanote Line) and Iriya Subway Station (Hibiya Line). Ueno Park and its museums are within a 10-15 minute walk. The immediate area is residential and quiet, with plenty of restaurants, convenience stores (Family Mart, 7-Eleven), and a budget supermarket (My Basket) around the corner. The Yamanote Line provides direct access to Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Tokyo Station. For airport transfers, use the Keisei Skyliner from Ueno or the Narita Express from Tokyo Station. The entrance is down a narrow lane that can be hard to spot at first; look for lighted windows with bunk beds visible from the street.

Accommodation

Rooms range from female-only and mixed dorms with privacy curtains to private doubles, twins, and family rooms - all with comfortable bedding and basic amenities.
Dormitory rooms (8-10 beds) feature individual bunk beds with thick privacy curtains, personal power sockets, and a small shelf. Lockers are available in or near the dorm. Private rooms (semi-double, double, twin, family) are compact but functional, with some offering a balcony, mini-fridge, flat-screen TV, air conditioning, and an en-suite bathroom with a Japanese modular tub. All rooms are non-smoking. Bedding is comfortable, but guests must put on their own duvet cover, pillowcase, and bedsheet. Sound insulation between rooms is poor - doors are heavy and slam loudly, and voices from adjacent rooms can be heard. Some rooms have windows onto the street without curtains, limiting privacy. A few rooms have a cigarette smell despite being non-smoking. The property has no elevator; rooms are on floors 2-4. The female dorm has its own washbasin area.

Dining

No restaurant or breakfast is served, but the hostel provides a fully equipped self-service kitchen with free tea and coffee, and the neighbourhood is packed with dining options.
The large communal kitchen includes multiple hobs, a microwave, a toaster, a rice cooker, pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery - all free to use. Complementary tea and coffee are available 24/7. A vending machine sells drinks at reasonable prices. The immediate area has dozens of restaurants within a 2-3 minute walk, including ramen shops, sushi, kushiyaki (grilled skewers), and a 70-yen yakitori stand. A Family Mart and a 7-Eleven are around the corner for quick meals and groceries. For a wider selection, Ueno's Ameyoko market street is a 15-minute walk or one train stop away.

Leisure

Leisure facilities are basic: a small garden, free movie nights, and bicycle rental for exploring the city.
The hostel has a small garden where guests can sit outside. Free movie nights are held regularly in the common area, with a library of Ghibli films available. Bicycles can be rented for a small fee (around 500 JPY per day), making it easy to explore Ueno, Asakusa, and the river areas. The nearby Ueno Park has museums, a zoo, and walking paths. A traditional Japanese sento (public bath) is within walking distance and recommended for a relaxing soak.

Amenities

Practical services include free WiFi, luggage storage, lockers, daily housekeeping, a shared lounge, and laundry for a fee - all run by a helpful English-speaking team.
WiFi is free throughout the building, though the connection can become patchy during peak hours. Daily housekeeping is provided (free) for common areas; dorm floors and bathrooms are not always cleaned during multi-night stays. Luggage storage is free on arrival and departure, and the hostel will hold bags for several days if you return later - a major convenience for multi-city trips. Lockers (free, with a refundable 100 JPY coin) are available for valuables. Laundry machines (wash and dry) are available for a fee (around 200-300 JPY per load). A computer with internet access is available in the lobby, and staff can print boarding passes for free. Safety features include CCTV, key-card entry, and a safety deposit box. The shared lounge has sofas, a TV, and a selection of DVDs. The reception is open from 06:00 to 01:00. Bicycle rental is available for an additional charge. Adaptors and umbrellas are offered free of charge. The hostel also has a designated smoking area outside.

Top Strategic Tips

  • 01

Use the free luggage storage before check-in or after check-out to explore Tokyo hands-free.

  • 02

Book a private room if you need guaranteed quiet sleep; shared dorms are susceptible to noise from other travellers.

  • 03

Choose a room on a lower floor to avoid climbing stairs, as there is no elevator.

  • 04

Take the Yamanote Line from Uguisudani Station (5-minute walk) for direct access to Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ueno.
