CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN RESORT, Galena

The resort sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, about 11km from the Galena-Jo Daviess County History Museum and 16km from the J Dubuque Monument. Belvedere Mansion and the Galena Historic District are both less than 11 km away. The setting is secluded, with a dark road at night that reinforces the quiet atmosphere, yet downtown Galena is a 15-minute drive for shopping and dining. For those arriving by car, free on-site parking is available without a reservation, and an electric vehicle charging station is provided. A boat dock is present at the base of the property, but reaching the main resort requires a chairlift ride with variable hours.

Standard rooms are small and include a smaller bathroom with a shelf rather than a full counter. Premier rooms are larger and add a small table, chairs, a sofa, and a larger bathroom with an extra sink outside the main vanity. No rooms have balconies. River views cannot be guaranteed when booking through third-party channels. In-room amenities include a flat-screen cable TV, microwave, mini-fridge, air conditioning, heating, ironing facilities, and a coffee machine (single-cup, not Keurig). Rooms with two queen beds are available. The property can accommodate groups up to 16 people in a single room. The hotel is showing age - rooms and corridors have worn carpets, dated furniture, and small bathrooms - but are functional and clean. Road-facing (courtside) rooms overlook parking or service areas rather than the slopes or river.

The Summit Restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11AM-9PM and Friday-Sunday 8AM-9PM. Lunch and dinner menus are available every day, featuring options such as broiled shrimp, walleye strips, burgers, and pizza. A full breakfast menu (not complimentary) is served on Saturdays and Sundays. Monday-Thursday guests receive a breakfast bag with muffins and fruit. The restaurant terrace provides panoramic views of the Mississippi River and is a popular spot for sunset dining. The bar is open during restaurant hours and offers a selection of beers and cocktails. A vending machine for drinks and snacks is available on site. The food is consistently described as good, with attentive service, though some dinner items like the birthday special are only offered on certain days.

The indoor swimming pool is open year-round with hours 9AM-11PM; it is cleaned and sanitized for 30 minutes approximately every two hours. Pool towels and sun loungers are provided. A hot tub and sauna are also available and have been noted as clean and well-maintained. Summer and fall activities include an alpine slide, zip-line, boat tours (subject to river conditions), Segway tours, mountain biking, and hiking. Mini-golf and a children's playground are on site. In winter, the resort offers ski-to-door access, a ski school, and equipment rental. Lift tickets are purchased separately and are not included with the room. The slopes close for the season in mid-March; the last operation day in 2025 was March16.
