BUSINESS HOTEL YAMASHIRO, Tokyo

The hotel sits inside Kabukicho, Tokyo's best-known entertainment and nightlife district, putting you steps from countless bars, clubs, restaurants and convenience stores. Shinjuku Station (a major rail and subway hub) is about a 7- to 10-minute walk, though dragging suitcases through busy streets can be awkward. From JR Shinjuku Station, Shibuya is a 7-minute train ride and Meiji Jingu Shrine is reachable in about 10 minutes (5-minute train + 5-minute walk). Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a 15-minute stroll away. The immediate block is noisy at night due to host clubs and street activity, and some travellers find the area more suitable for adult-focused trips than for families.

Rooms are split between Japanese-style tatami rooms (above ground, with windows) and western-style rooms located on the basement level (no windows). The twin tatami rooms feature two futons, a seating area, wardrobe, flat-screen TV and air conditioning. Private bathrooms include a bath, shower, free toiletries and hairdryer; some layouts separate the toilet from the bathing area, which is convenient for multiple people. Sleeping comfort is mixed: futon mats are thinner than in other Japanese-style accommodation, which can affect sleep quality for those used to thicker mattresses. The rooms are noted as spacious for the price, but the property shows signs of age including worn tatami, older fixtures and carpets. The tatami option provides a uniquely Japanese experience but is best suited to travellers who prioritise location and budget over plush bedding or modern amenities.
