Located 4 minutes on foot from Roma Termini, the city's central train and metro station, Hotel California offers direct rail links to both Fiumicino (€14 by train) and Ciampino airports, as well as high-speed trains across Italy. The Colosseum is 2 metro stops away (or a 20-minute walk), and the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are within a 20-minute stroll. The surrounding streets of the Esquilino neighbourhood are filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, including a trattoria right at the doorstep. The tram line runs along the main street, but interior rooms are quieter. Taxis to FCO airport cost a fixed €48, and the hotel can arrange transfers for €55. The area is well-connected by public transport, with metro line B and multiple bus routes nearby. The immediate vicinity around Termini can feel busy, especially at night, but the hotel itself is in a relatively safe and well-lit area.

The hotel offers a mix of classic and modern rooms, with many recently renovated to a contemporary standard. Standard rooms are functional and compact, while quadruple rooms are larger and split into two areas with separate beds. Superior double rooms may include a spa bath or sauna by request and availability. All rooms feature air conditioning, heating, a minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, a safe, and a private bathroom with a shower and hairdryer. Some rooms have a bathtub built into the bedroom area, with the toilet and bidet in a separate, smaller space. Some rooms are small and some have dated furniture; building maintenance and cleanliness can be inconsistent. Road-facing rooms can be noisy due to the tram, while interior rooms are quieter. Pillow and mattress condition varies. Rooms on higher floors require the lift, which can occasionally be out of service.

The breakfast includes pastries, bread, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, fruit, hot drinks, and some hot options such as eggs and sausages. The breakfast room is small and may require waiting for a table during peak hours. The hotel has a snack bar and offers breakfast in the room, as well as a vending machine with drinks and snacks. A wide variety of restaurants, trattorias, and pizzerias are located within a 300-metre radius of the hotel, including Ristorante Il Secchio, Binario 37, and Ristorante Santi, offering everything from classic Italian to international cuisine.
