FAR HOME ATOCHA, Madrid

This hostel sits in the vibrant heart of Madrid, putting major sights within a short walk: Plaza Mayor is a 2-minute stroll away, Sol Square is 300 m off, and the famous tapas-and-nightlife strip on Calle de Huertas is a 5-minute walk. The nearest metro, Antón Martín (Line 1), is a 2-minute walk, making it practical for reaching Atocha train station in under 15 minutes on foot or a single metro stop. Madrid-Barajas Airport is reachable by taking the yellow Express Bus to Atocha station and walking 15 minutes up Calle Atocha, or via metro (Line 8 then 6 then 1 to Antón Martín). The neighbourhood is filled with shops, restaurants, tapas bars, and supermarkets, making self-catering easy. Private rooms facing the street can pick up night-time noise, so lighter sleepers may want to avoid a road-facing unit.

Rooms range from compact private doubles with shared or en-suite bathrooms to multibed dorms (6, 12, or 3-bed female-only). Each bed has a reading light, power outlet, and shelf, plus a secure locker (bring your own padlock). Private rooms come with a flat-screen TV, wardrobe, parquet floors, and either a private or shared bathroom. Some dormitories have a bathroom inside the room, which can cause odour issues if ventilation is poor. Rooms on upper floors are lift-accessible. Windowless rooms in private doubles can become stuffy; those with a window sometimes lack privacy due to a sheer curtain onto a shared courtyard. Air conditioning is effective but can be noisy, and some units malfunction. The 12-bed dormitory is very basic with open bunks and no curtains, which means light and noise travel easily. Locker theft has been a concern, so sensitive items should not be left unsecured.

The breakfast is a continental buffet with bread, pastries, cold cuts, cereals, hot drinks, and juice - described as good value for the price. For those who prefer to self-cater, the shared kitchen has a microwave, kettle, toaster, and fridge, and the surrounding streets are packed with tapas bars, restaurants, and supermarkets within a 5-minute walk. No cooked meals are available at the hostel, and the kitchen lacks a stove or oven, limiting cooking options. Vending machines for snacks and drinks are available.

The hostel's main leisure offerings are its open-air patio - a sunny space for reading, breakfast, or socialising - and a spacious common area that includes a piano and a co-working-friendly setting. The patio is a popular spot but can be smoky and noisy until late, potentially disturbing nearby rooms. Occasionally the hostel organises free activities such as yoga, meditation sessions, a guided city walk, movie nights, or a free coffee-and-churros morning. No swimming pool, spa, or fitness room is present on site.
