HAYES VALLEY INN, San Francisco

The inn is a 5-minute walk from the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco City Hall and Van Ness BRT/light-rail station. Civic Center/UN Plaza BART, with rail service to San Francisco International Airport and downtown, is a 10-minute walk away. The Asian Art Museum and Bill Graham Civic Auditorium are a 5-minute drive. Several restaurants, boutiques, galleries and cafes are within 0.5 km-the inn sits directly above a corner sports bar/restaurant. The area is safe, walkable and lively, especially in the evening. Street-facing rooms hear noise from the bars and street traffic; non-street-facing rooms may still pick up ambient noise from nearby ventilation systems.

This inn offers double rooms with either one queen bed, one double bed, or two twin beds. All rooms have a private sink and vanity inside the room but the toilet and shower/bath are shared with the floor (two separate rooms per floor, serving about 8-10 rooms). Some larger rooms include a small sitting area with a bay window and city views. Each room includes heating, a fan, a flat-screen cable TV, free Wi-Fi, free toiletries, and carpeted floors; some rooms have a washing machine. Stovetop, kitchenware, refrigerator, and microwave are available in the common kitchen. Rooms facing the street can be noisy due to the bar below and traffic; higher-floor or non-street-facing rooms are quieter. The property is an older 19th-century building and some rooms show their age-frayed carpets, dated decor and sometimes a stale smell. Sound insulation between rooms is poor. Rooms are basic but generally clean and comfortable.

The inn does not serve breakfast. There is no on-site restaurant or bar. Instead, a fully equipped shared kitchen on the second floor is available: it contains a stove, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, kettle, free coffee, tea and hot chocolate, utensils, cups, plates and a spacious dining area with natural light. The immediate neighbourhood has many restaurants and cafes within 0.5 km, including French, Italian and American options, a bakery and a Trader Joe's market for groceries.

There is no spa, wellness centre, swimming pool or fitness room at Hayes Valley Inn. The shared lounge/TV area and the shared kitchen provide relaxation space. For leisure, the inn's Hayes Valley setting offers easy walking access to shops, art galleries, the opera, the symphony and the Asian Art Museum. Painted Ladies and Haight-Ashbury are a short walk away.
