HOTEL 81 PREMIER STAR, Singapore

Situated in Geylang, one of Singapore's more colourful districts, the hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Aljunied MRT station, putting the rest of the city within easy reach - Orchard Road and the Central Business District are about 15 minutes away by taxi or train, and Bugis Street is three MRT stops. The immediate neighbourhood is a known red-light area, with brothels and related establishments directly opposite the hotel and lining the block. While it remains safe and discreet during the day, evening ambience can feel awkward for some families, solo female travellers, or those unused to such surroundings. On the practical side, the area is packed with excellent and affordable local food options, supermarkets, and small shops. For airport access, the MRT offers a direct line taking around 25 minutes, while a taxi takes roughly 15-20 minutes. A bus stop is located just 50 metres away, and Mountbatten MRT station is also reachable within a 15-minute walk.

The rooms at Hotel 81 Premier Star are compact - typically sized around 15 m2 - and best suited for travellers who plan to spend most of their time out exploring. Each room comes with a private bathroom (shower only, no bathtub, sink located outside the bathroom), air conditioning, a mini fridge, a safe, a kettle with tea/coffee, and a flat-screen satellite TV. All rooms have a window, but these are sealed shut - no window can be opened, which means no natural ventilation. The air conditioning is individually controlled but can be difficult to adjust precisely; some units are noisy. Bedding is a pocket spring mattress - firm rather than plush - with a comfortable enough surface for most short stays. Storage is limited: there is a hanging bar with a few hangers, no wardrobe, and no socket near the bed. Room soundproofing is minimal; noise from the corridor and adjacent rooms is often audible, making light sleepers or long-stay guests potentially uncomfortable. Cleanliness is generally good, though some guests report mould in the bathroom, dusty floors, or insects on occasion. Twin, double, triple and family interconnecting rooms (subject to availability) are available.

The hotel offers a practical set of services for a budget stay: free Wi-Fi (reliable for browsing and messaging), a 24-hour front desk that can assist with tour arrangements and ticketing, and free luggage storage - very useful for early arrivals or late departures. Private on-site parking is available but must be reserved in advance, and charges may apply - a notable plus for a hotel in this price bracket and location. A lift serves all floors. Daily housekeeping is standard (free), though on weekends it may need to be requested at reception. Laundry and ironing services are available on request (charges may apply). Security features include CCTV outside, fire extinguishers, and key-card access. The hotel also provides loan of umbrellas and power adaptors. There is no business centre, but the front desk can assist with printing or organising transport.
