The Upham is located downtown Santa Barbara, one block from the Santa Barbara Public Market and a five-minute walk from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Beaches and Stearns Wharf are about 2 km away, reachable on foot, by car, or via nearby BCycle e-bikes. The airport is a 20-minute drive. Free on-site parking is available but limited to a first-come, first-served basis; an overflow lot operates on Friday and Saturday. Several restaurants (Olio E Limone Ristorante, Carlitos Cafe y Cantina, Bouchon, and others) are within a half-mile, and State Street's dining and shopping are easily accessible without a car. The garden courtyard provides a quiet retreat from the street, though some rooms near the road or parking lot may experience traffic noise.

The hotel offers 50 accommodations, including spacious suites like the Sycamore Suite with a jacuzzi tub, fireplace, and outdoor lounge; the Magnolia Suite with a king bed and separate living room; and the two-bedroom Laurel Suite ideal for families. Most Garden Cottages are ground level, many with private patios and wood-burning fireplaces. Standard rooms are cozy, with classic decor and flat-screen TVs, but some may feel dated, and a few have reported musty odors, mold, or thin walls. Rooms with street or upper-floor exposure can experience noise, while those facing the garden tend to be quieter. All rooms include private bathrooms, air conditioning (some units have been reported as noisy or ineffective), and tea/coffee facilities. A single ADA-compliant cottage (Fireplace King) is available. Balconies are not offered.

Breakfast includes an assortment of pastries, fruit, coffee, and tea, but is limited to these items-no hot dishes or proteins are offered. Happy hour features wine (and occasionally snacks such as cookies). Louie's California Bistro is on site, serving California comfort food for brunch, lunch, and dinner with an extensive wine list. Restaurant reservations are recommended-use Open Table. For additional dining variety, there are many restaurants within a short walk on State Street.

Leisure activities are centered around the acre of gardens, which include outdoor furniture, a gazebo, and quiet seating areas. Board games and puzzles are available for family entertainment. Hiking is accessible-free off-site trails are nearby. Day passes to Gold's Gym are sold for $15. The property's garden setting is often noted as peaceful and relaxing, making it suitable for reading or unwinding.

Free Wi-Fi covers all areas. Parking is free but on a first-come, first-served basis; street parking is also available (note timed restrictions on some streets). An overflow lot operates Friday and Saturday from 5 PM to Sunday 5 PM. Luggage storage is free, useful for early arrivals or late departures. Meeting and banquet facilities are available for events. There is no elevator, and the property has multiple buildings with stairs, so ground-floor rooms are recommended for those with mobility concerns. Service animals are allowed; no pets. E-bikes cannot be stored on site, but bike rentals (with a 10% discount at Santa Barbara Bikes To Go) and BCycle e-bikes are nearby.
