Big Backpackers Hostel sits in the heart of Sydney, steps from Central Station and metres from Oxford Street, the city's LGBTIQ+ centre. This central position allows easy access to public transport, with bus stops for Bondi Beach right outside. The Opera House and Harbour Bridge are a 30-minute walk or a short train ride away. Pitt Street shopping, Surry Hills dining on Crown Street and a wide variety of Asian cuisine in Chinatown are all within a few minutes' walk. The neighbourhood is well served by trains, trams and buses, making it practical for both sightseeing and daily errands. Car access is limited - there is no hostel parking; the nearest paid parking lots are Secure Parking on Goulburn Street and World Square.

Room options include single-sex and mixed dorms in configurations such as 2-bed female-only or 4-bed ensuite, as well as private double rooms with or without private bathrooms. All rooms are air conditioned and have carpeted floors. Dorm beds have metal frames that can be noisy when moving - consider this if sharing a room. Some rooms face the road and may experience traffic noise. Limited power outlets are available near beds in some dorms. There are no TVs in rooms - they are located only in the common lounge. Bedding is provided and you make your own bed upon arrival. Towels are supplied in private rooms; in dorms a towel rental fee of $6 applies. Rooms do not have balconies, but lift access is available to all floors including the rooftop terrace.

Big Backpackers Hostel does not have a restaurant, but provides a 24/7 shared kitchen with hot plates, cookware, a fridge, and free tea, coffee and milk powder. Guests can prepare their own meals and store ingredients using provided lockable storage. Outdoor BBQ facilities are available. Vending machines offer drinks and snacks. The hostel's central location puts numerous dining choices within a 5-minute walk, including Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Italian restaurants on Crown Street and in Chinatown. Several cafés serving breakfast and brunch are also nearby. The kitchen is cleaned daily but may become messy depending on use; planning meal times to avoid peak hours can help.

The hostel's rooftop terrace provides outdoor seating and city views for relaxing or socialising. The events team runs daily activities such as walking tours, pub crawls, BBQs and movie nights, which can be a good way to meet other travellers. A spacious shared lounge has a TV, sofas, board games and a noticeboard with tips on working holiday jobs and local information. There is no swimming pool, gym or spa on site, but the central location makes it easy to reach parks and fitness venues nearby.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. A 24-hour reception with security and CCTV covers common areas and entrances. Luggage storage is free before check-in and after check-out; overnight storage costs $5 per bag. Daily housekeeping is included and covers bins and towel changes in shared bathrooms. Laundry facilities are available for an additional fee. The lift provides access to all floors and the rooftop. There is no parking on site - street parking is paid by the hour and nearby parking lots offer online booking. An airport shuttle is not offered, but Central Station is a 5-minute walk with direct trains to Sydney Airport. Mail can be received for up to one week. Fax/photocopying is available for a surcharge.
