Colonial Inn is situated on the oceanfront beside the historic Nags Head Fishing Pier, providing a private walkway over the dunes to the beach. Within a short stroll are multiple dining options including Capt. Andy's Oceanfront Bar & Grill, Pier House Restaurant, and Lucky 12 Tavern. The motel is 1 km from Jockey's Ridge State Park, 6 km from Nags Head Golf Links, 8 km from Wright Brothers Memorial, and a 20-minute drive from Roanoke Island Festival Park. Free on-site parking is available but limited to one space per room, with overflow parking 0.5 km away.

The motel offers double rooms, deluxe rooms with kitchenettes, and apartments with full kitchens including stove, oven, and utensils. All units have air conditioning, private bathroom with bath/shower, free toiletries, and coffee makers. Only six Ocean Front rooms exist, located on the second floor with a shared patio and partial dune view; the ocean view is obstructed by dunes. Other rooms overlook the courtyard or pool. Rooms are compact, particularly bathrooms, and the building is older with dated furnishings though some units have been refreshed. Noise can carry between rooms. Two-bedroom apartments include separate bedrooms with king beds and a pull-out sofa. No rooms are wheelchair accessible; a few have walk-in showers.

Colonial Inn does not have a restaurant, bar, or breakfast service. The Nags Head Pier, less than a minute's walk away, offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Within a 5-minute walk you'll find Capt. Andy's Oceanfront Bar & Grill, Pier House Restaurant, Lucky 12 Tavern, Tortugas Lie, and the Surfin Spoon for frozen treats. Many rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens, allowing guests to prepare their own meals using the in-room refrigerator and stove.

The outdoor swimming pool is fenced, has a shallow end, and is equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas. It is typically open from spring through mid-October, weather permitting. Direct private beach access via a walkway over the dunes leads to the Atlantic Ocean. The adjacent Nags Head Pier offers fishing for a fee. BBQ facilities are available on site. There is no spa or gym.
