Shutters on the Banks sits directly on the Atlantic beach in Kill Devil Hills, 7 km from Nags Head and 7 km from Kitty Hawk. Duck is 20 km north. The property offers a private beach with a wooden boardwalk and geo-mat pathway over the dune; the path can be steep and is not suitable for wheelchairs or travellers with limited mobility. Several restaurants, bars, and shops are within a short walk, including Outer Banks Brewing, Thai Room, Secret Island Tavern, and Sal's New York Pizza (0.3-0.5 km). The Wright Brothers National Memorial is a short drive away. Parking is free and plentiful on site.

Accommodation is spread across the Main Building (two floors, no elevator) and the Tower Building (with elevator). Room types include Dune View rooms on the first two floors of the Tower, which face the sand dune and do not see the ocean; Ocean View rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors have private balconies with clear ocean views. A Sunrise Suite (one room only) has two bathrooms. Efficiency rooms in the Main Building have kitchenettes with a stove, microwave, and refrigerator, but no balcony or ocean view. Standard rooms include a private bathroom with bath and shower, hairdryer, flat-screen TV with cable channels, air conditioning, heating, coffee machine, and wardrobe. Some rooms have a patio or balcony with pool or parking-lot views. Bedding is two queen beds. Room sizes vary; some interior spaces can feel compact, especially the bathroom, which may be small with minimal counter space. Ceiling height may be low. Accessible rooms are located on the first floor of the Main Building and feature lowered beds, closet bars, widened doorways, and accessible controls.

A free continental breakfast is served each morning in a compact dining room with additional outdoor seating on a covered veranda. Hot options rotate daily and may include scrambled eggs, sausage patties, bacon, biscuits & gravy, waffles, French toast, oatmeal, and fresh fruit. Cold offerings include bagels, muffins, cereal, yogurt, milk, juices, and coffee. The selection is solid for a free breakfast, but the room can feel crowded during peak times. For a wider variety or a sit-down meal, several restaurants are within a 5-minute walk and offer pizza, Thai cuisine, seafood, and ice cream.

Leisure facilities include a heated indoor saltwater pool open year-round, a seasonal outdoor saltwater pool (typically open until October), and a hot tub. Pool towels and sun loungers are provided. The fitness centre includes basic exercise equipment. The beach offers a private access point, and a seasonal beach chair and umbrella rental service is available (approximately $34 per day for two chairs and an umbrella). An outdoor foot rinse station helps keep sand out of the rooms. Nearby activities include golf, mini-golf, horse riding, hiking, fishing, and windsurfing (many at additional cost and off-site). Board games and a corn hole set are available on the property.

Free Wi-Fi covers all areas of the property. Free private parking is available on site with accessible spaces and no reservation required. The 24-hour front desk can assist with luggage storage and late arrivals. Daily housekeeping is included, but frequency and thoroughness can vary; requesting extra towels or coffee refills at the front desk may be necessary. Laundry is available for a fee ($2.50 per load) using one washer and one dryer. The business centre offers free fax/photocopying. Vending machines stock drinks and snacks. Safety features include key-card access, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and CCTV in common areas. No airport shuttle or on-site restaurant is available. The Tower Building has an elevator; the Main Building does not.
