HI Chicago Hostel is located in Chicago's South Loop, three blocks from Grant Park and a short walk from Lake Michigan. The CTA Blue Line from O'Hare stops at Jackson station, 10 minutes away. Union Station is 2 km; Soldier Field is 2 km (30-minute walk or bus ride). Nearby attractions include Millennium Park, the Art Institute, and the Chicago Cultural Center. Restaurants such as BeeZzee Fresh Food (0.5 km), Epic Burger (0.5 km), and Dollop Coffee Co (0.5 km) are within easy reach. Public transport is excellent, with multiple bus and train lines nearby. The area has a noticeable homeless population near the hostel.

Room types include 4-10 bed dorms (female, male, mixed), private double/king rooms with shared bathrooms, and one-bedroom suites with private bathrooms. Dormitories have extra-long twin beds, lockers large enough for a carry-on (bring your own lock), and privacy curtains. Linens and towels are provided. Private rooms include a desk, chair, and closet; some have a flat-screen TV. Room temperature is controlled centrally and cannot be adjusted individually, which can result in rooms being too cold or too warm. Soundproofing is limited; rooms facing the elevated train tracks may hear the 'L' train throughout the night. Some rooms have city views. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are available.

Breakfast is no longer offered at HI Chicago. The shared kitchen on the second floor is equipped with stoves, ovens, microwaves, and refrigerators, but guests must supply their own dishes, utensils, and cookware. Coffee, hot water, and a water cooler are available free of charge in common areas. Vending machines dispense drinks and snacks 24/7. Within a short walk there are several dining options: BeeZzee Fresh Food (0.5 km), Epic Burger (0.5 km), Thai Spoon And Sushi (0.5 km), and more. A Target (500 m) and CVS across the street allow for grocery shopping.

The hostel organizes free events every day, such as walking tours led by local volunteers, pub crawls, welcome parties, and yoga sessions. The second-floor common area features billiards, table tennis, board games, and a TV lounge with comfortable seating. These spaces are also ideal for working or socializing. There is no on-site pool, spa, or fitness center, but the location near Lake Michigan provides opportunities for outdoor recreation.
