WAIKIKI BEACHSIDE HOSTEL, Honolulu

The hostel sits one block from the beach, putting you steps from the sand and the buzzing Waikiki strip. Bus stops for routes #19 and #20 are nearby, providing direct access to downtown Honolulu and the airport (approximately 1.5 hours by bus). For drivers, free street parking is available on Monsarrat Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard (check signs for restrictions) or paid garage parking at Waikiki Banyan for $30 per night. The neighbourhood is safe even late at night, with ABC convenience stores and numerous dining options within a short walk, including the on-site HI. Shack restaurant. This central location makes it easy to explore Diamond Head, the Honolulu Zoo, and Kapiolani Park on foot.

The hostel exclusively offers shared dormitories: 4-bed and 8-bed rooms (no private or single rooms). Bunk bed assignments are first-come, first-serve; top bunks require climbing a narrow ladder and the metal frames can be squeaky. Rooms are on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th floor with stair-only access. Select rooms include a private bathroom and a small kitchenette with stovetop, refrigerator, and basic cookware, shared with the adjoining unit. Air conditioning is provided but may be limited to one unit per room; some rooms rely on fans. Lockers are available in each dorm but are small (fit laptops and cameras, not large backpacks; padlocks sold for $10). There are no privacy curtains or reading lights at the beds, and power outlets are scarce. Linens and one towel per stay are provided (extra towels $7). Housekeeping cleans daily but may be superficial. For a quieter experience, request a room in the 'C' building.

Breakfast is included: pancakes and coffee every morning from 8-10 AM. Free coffee and tea are available throughout the day in the common area. The on-site restaurant, HI. Shack, offers American cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For variety, numerous restaurants are within a 2-5 minute walk, including Teddy's Bigger Burgers, Sansei Seafood, and Arancino di Mare. Each dorm with a kitchenette includes a stovetop, refrigerator, and basic cookware for self-catering. A communal kitchen is also available, though it closes at 10 PM and equipment can be limited during peak hours. Note that the kitchen in the dorm rooms is shared with the adjoining unit.

The hostel provides complimentary beach gear: surfboards, bodyboards, snorkelling equipment, beach chairs, and umbrellas. The outdoor courtyard features table tennis, a basketball hoop, and ample seating. A small fitness centre is available for workouts. Evening activities are organised nightly, including movie nights, karaoke, art nights, and BBQs. A free walking tour is offered on Sundays. There is no pool or spa on site. The beach itself is perfect for surfing and sunbathing, with equipment rental included in your stay.

The hostel offers a 24-hour front desk with concierge and tour desk services. Free WiFi is available in all areas (speeds can vary). Daily housekeeping is provided but may not be thorough. Luggage storage is offered before check-in and after checkout at no charge. Lockers in each dorm are small; you can buy a padlock for $10. Laundry facilities (washers and dryers) are available for a fee. The communal lounge/TV area is a popular meeting spot. Parking: no on-site parking; free street parking is a 5+ minute walk (read signs), and paid garage parking costs $30 per night. Check-in requires a valid government-issued ID and proof of onward travel. A deposit equal to the first night is charged at booking.
