ALBION HOTEL, Glasgow

The hotel sits in a peaceful cul-de-sac overlooking the River Kelvin, just off Great Western Road. Kelvinbridge Underground Station is barely a two-minute walk away, providing direct links to Buchanan Street and the wider city. Glasgow city centre is a pleasant 20-minute stroll or a short subway ride. The West End's best attractions-Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Botanic Gardens, and the University of Glasgow-are all within easy walking distance. Numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants line nearby streets, with eight eateries within 0.3km. Glasgow International Airport is a 15-minute drive, and the hotel is well-served by bus routes. Parking on the crescent is free overnight and at weekends, though paid weekday restrictions apply. A car park beside Kelvinbridge station is available for a daily fee.

The hotel occupies a grand period townhouse, and bedrooms vary in size. Budget-level rooms, particularly those on the top floor under the eaves, can feel very small-some measure around 11m2-making them best suited for short stays or solo travellers. Larger rooms, including family rooms with up to four beds, are available on request. Every room is en-suite with a private bathroom (shower over bath or walk-in shower), and amenities include a hairdryer, ironing facilities, and a fridge in many rooms. Bed firmness varies; some mattresses are softer, while others are reported as firm and supportive. Pillows can be flat or lumpy in some rooms-guests sensitive to pillow height may wish to request extras at reception. Rooms at the front overlook the river and are quiet; those at the rear face a courtyard where staff sometimes smoke, and rooms near the dining area may experience cooking smells in the morning. There is no air conditioning, but heating is effective and adjustable. All rooms are non-smoking.

Breakfast can be added at check-in for £9 per person-a good-value option that includes cereals, a buffet selection, and a full cooked breakfast cooked to order, plus unlimited tea, coffee, and fruit juice. The dining room is bright and airy, and service is included. No restaurant or bar is on site, but the West End location places dozens of cafes, pubs, and restaurants within a short walk-eight are within 0.3km, offering Italian, Middle Eastern, and British pub food among other cuisines. For those who prefer to eat out, the surrounding area has plentiful breakfast and brunch options as well. The hotel does not offer lunch or dinner, so plan evening meals at nearby venues.

For active guests, a golf course is located within 3km of the hotel and can be accessed for an additional fee. There is no swimming pool, spa, or fitness centre on the property. The West End's parks-Kelvingrove Park and the Botanic Gardens-are within walking distance and provide green space for jogging or relaxing. The hotel's quiet residential setting and riverside location also make it a pleasant base for walking tours of the area.
