CASTLE ROCK HOSTEL - ADULTS ONLY, Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle is literally across the street, and the Royal Mile, Princes Street Gardens, the Scottish National Gallery, and the National Museum of Scotland are all within a 5- to 10-minute walk. Waverley Train Station is an 11-minute walk downhill. For airport transfers, the Airlink 100 bus stop is a 10-minute walk away; the bus runs every 10 minutes 24 hours a day. The tram also stops about 15 minutes away. The area is well served by pubs, restaurants, and shops, and the hostel serves as a pick-up point for free walking tours of the city.

Rooms range from 12 to 23 m² and include shared dormitories (4-12 beds), female-only dorms, and private rooms (single, double, twin, quad). All rooms have shared bathroom facilities with showers; no room has a private bathroom. Each bunk bed comes with a bedside locker (school-sized, suitable for a small backpack) and linens are provided. Towels are not included in dorms (rental £2). The building is old, with carpeted floors, heating, and no air conditioning. Road-facing rooms can be noisy, and the lack of privacy curtains on bunks means light and sound travel easily. Some rooms have skylight windows that let in morning light. Mattresses vary - some are worn, so it is worth checking your bed on arrival. The hostel has no lift, and rooms are accessed via multiple flights of stairs.

Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 10:30 and includes a continental buffet with bread, pastries, cereal, and hot drinks. For those who prefer to cook, the hostel provides a fully equipped kitchen with cookware, utensils, and refrigerator space, open from 5:00 to midnight. Free tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are available all day in the lounge. There is no restaurant on-site, but the surrounding Grassmarket and Royal Mile areas offer numerous dining options within a 3-minute walk.

The hostel offers free billiards, board games, and a cinema room with a large screen. Daily activities include a free walking tour and cultural classes, as well as a free pub crawl every Thursday (except in August). Stand-up comedy nights are available for an additional charge. A music room and study room provide quieter spaces. There is no spa, pool, or gym on-site.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. The 24-hour reception allows flexible check-in and check-out; late arrivals are accommodated by notifying the team. Luggage storage is free before check-in and after check-out until 9:00 pm; longer-term storage costs £5 per night. Laundry service is available for a fee (washed, dried, and folded). Lockers with keys are provided in each room. Daily housekeeping is included. Safety features include 24-hour security, CCTV in common areas, smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers.
