CATALONIA PORTAL DE L'ANGEL, Barcelona

The hotel is housed in a 19th-century building at the centre of the city. Catalunya metro and railway station is 5 minutes on foot, and the Aerobus from Barcelona-El Prat Airport stops at Plaça de Catalunya, making for an easy transfer. A taxi from the airport takes about 30 minutes and costs €35-40. The surrounding area is filled with shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks. While the street is vibrant and pedestrianized, rooms facing the interior courtyard are surprisingly quiet. The Gothic Quarter, El Born, and many major attractions are within a 10-15 minute walk.

Standard double rooms (14 m2) offer an elegant grey-and-parquet design. Premium rooms (16 m2) have rain showers and magnifying mirrors. The Premium Terrace (25 m2) adds private outdoor furniture, while Superior rooms (32 m2) include bathrobes, slippers, and turndown service. The Terrace room overlooks the garden patio. For extra space, the triple room (22 m2) includes an extra bed. The highlight is the split-level suite (50 m2) on the top floor, with a king bed, living area, Nespresso machine, pillow menu, and a private terrace with city views. All rooms have private bathrooms, coffee/tea facilities, and soundproofing. Some rooms on the street side can be noisy, while interior rooms are very quiet. Renovated rooms are modern; a few older ones show wear. Beds are generally comfortable and bathrooms well-appointed.

The breakfast buffet includes fresh orange juice, breads, pastries, cold cuts, and hot dishes. For lunch and dinner, the Gastrobar (open 12:00-23:00) serves a varied menu of salads, pizzas, tapas, and Mediterranean mains. Room service is available from 12:30-16:00 and 19:30-23:30, with a similar menu. A coffee house and snack bar are also on-site. For a meal outside the hotel, numerous restaurants are within a short walk.

Set in a leafy courtyard with sun loungers and garden furniture, the pool provides a calm escape from the busy streets. It is open all year, but water temperature depends on the season - expect cool water in winter. Massage treatments can be arranged at reception for an additional charge. The hotel also broadcasts live sports events and offers free walking tours of the area. The sun terrace is ideal for relaxing with a drink from the Gastrobar.
