HOSTAL LA CASA DE LA PLAZA, Madrid

This location puts you in the heart of Madrid's historic core, with Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace all within a few minutes' walk. Ópera metro station (lines 2 and 5) is close by, and Sol station (lines 1, 2, 3 and Cercanías) is about 5 minutes on foot, giving direct access to Atocha and Chamartín train stations as well as the airport bus. The San Miguel Market is right opposite, and a Dia supermarket is next door for essentials. The ground floor is a pedestrianised square by day, but the area stays lively into the night, with bars, restaurants and late foot traffic. Bicycle rental stations are nearby, making it easy to explore without a car.

Rooms vary significantly. Interior single rooms are very small and have no window or natural light, relying on a fan for airflow, which can feel claustrophobic and stuffy. Street-facing rooms are larger, have a window or balcony overlooking the square, and receive natural light. All rooms have parquet floors and a TV. Shared bathrooms are cleaned multiple times daily and are generally in good condition, with good water pressure and hot water. Noise carries easily through the thin walls and doors, so light sleepers should request a quieter interior room away from the bathrooms and stairwell. No air conditioning is available - only pedestal fans. Bed sizes are standard, but a few reports note that beds can be short for taller travellers. Linen is provided. For a better experience, prioritise a room with a window and bring earplugs.

The 24-hour reception allows check-in at any hour, including after midnight, and luggage can be left for free before check-in or after check-out. The tour desk can help with local information. Wi-Fi is free and generally works well. Towels cost €1 to rent, and toilet paper and soap are supplied in the shared bathrooms. There is no communal kitchen, fridge, microwave or kettle.
