SUN CARIBBEAN PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Playa del Carmen

The hotel sits right next to the famous Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), meaning all the bars, restaurants, shops and clubs are within a minute's walk. The ADO bus terminal is around 15 blocks away, and the Cozumel ferry is only a few minutes' walk. The closest beach area is about 6 blocks away at Playa Mamitas, where paid beach clubs provide loungers and umbrellas. The area is extremely walkable for most needs, but the proximity to nightlife means very loud music from nearby bars (such as Señor Frog's) can be heard deep into the night, especially in lower-floor or street-facing rooms. Parking is available on-site for a daily fee (USD 10) but the immediate streets are very busy.

All rooms are air-conditioned and most include a minibar and a fan. The Deluxe Apartment includes a full kitchenette with stovetop, refrigerator, microwave and kitchenware-ideal for longer stays. Other private rooms feature a flat-screen TV, safety deposit box, wardrobe and garden views from a terrace or balcony. The cheapest categories (Caribeña Económica and similar) are very compact rooms with shared bathrooms, suitable only for short, budget-conscious stays. The shared bathrooms serve multiple rooms and can be less clean than private ones. In general, rooms are functional and clean but on the small side; space for luggage or clothing is limited in the most basic categories. Nearly all rooms have a private entrance. Daily housekeeping is included.

A continental breakfast is available at an additional charge-described as good value for its price. For other meals, the hotel's location on the edge of 5th Avenue puts dozens of restaurants, pubs and taco spots within a 5-minute walk, including La Parrilla Mexican Grill, Yo Amo Tacos, McCarthys Irish Pub and Los Aguachiles. The Deluxe Apartment's kitchenette allows self-catering, and there is a common area with a community kitchen and hammocks. A laundry service is available a few steps from the hotel if needed.

The pool area is set within a beautiful, well-maintained garden with natural vegetation and plenty of shaded spots. It includes a small plunge pool, sun loungers or beach chairs, and several hammocks for relaxing. The pool is free to use and open all year. There is no gym or spa on site. For beach access, Playa Mamitas and the main beach area are a 6-7 block walk; note that the shoreline between the two is rocky and often covered in seaweed.
