ITACA HOSTEL, Barcelona

The location is exceptional for exploring central Barcelona. The Aerobus from the airport stops at Plaza Catalunya, a short walk away. Many major attractions such as Las Ramblas, the Picasso Museum, and the Gothic Quarter are within walking distance. The area has an excellent selection of dining and nightlife, with numerous restaurants and bars within 0.5 km. Despite being in the city centre, the hostel is on a quiet street, though noise from the common area can travel to some rooms. Parking is not available on-site, but there is a public car park in Cathedral Square, a 2-minute walk away.

Accommodation is basic but functional. Dormitories have 6-8 beds, no privacy curtains, and shared bathrooms. Private rooms include a toilet but the shower is shared. Many rooms have balconies, but smoking there can cause smoke to enter the room. Bed quality is variable: upper bunks have narrow, uncomfortable ladders, and the beds may shake when others move. Air conditioning is only available at reception, not in the rooms; ceiling fans are provided instead. Windows must be left open in summer, which can let in mosquitoes and street noise. Lockers are large enough for luggage, and electrical sockets are available by each bed. Some rooms have reported musty smells and occasional bedbugs, so cleanliness can vary.

Guests can prepare their own meals in the clean, modern kitchen, which includes a dishwasher, microwave, and utensils. The hostel provides free tea, coffee, and hot chocolate 24/7. For those wanting a meal out, the surrounding streets are packed with restaurants, from local tapas bars to Vietnamese cuisine, all within a 3-minute walk. A snack bar and vending machines are available on-site for drinks and snacks. No breakfast is served, but the kitchen allows for self-catering.

Leisure at Itaca revolves around its social programme. Every day at 10:30 am there is a free walking tour of the city. Evening events include movie nights with popcorn, wine tastings at local bars, and sangria nights at the hostel. These activities are designed for solo travellers to meet others. The hostel also lends beach gear (umbrellas) and has board games and a guitar in the common room. The common areas are cosy and encourage mingling. However, the lack of quiet space and the noise from activities can be an issue for light sleepers.

The hostel is well-equipped for travellers. The 24-hour front desk allows late check-ins; notify if arriving after midnight. Luggage storage is free until 2pm on check-out day, and €2 for full-day storage. A day pass (€10) allows access to common areas and showers after check-out until 10 pm. Laundry service costs €10. Lockers with keys are provided in dorms. Safety features include CCTV, security alarm, fire extinguishers, and 24-hour security. Pets are not allowed. The property has no elevator; the hostel is on the second floor via stairs. Credit cards are accepted, but a deposit may be required. Bicycle storage is available for one bike on request.
