APA HOTEL UENO EKIMAE, Tokyo

The hotel sits directly across from the Hirokoji exit of JR Ueno Station via a pedestrian bridge, making it extremely convenient for rail travel on the Yamanote Loop line, the Ginza subway line, and the Keisei Skyliner to Narita Airport. Haneda Airport is 21 km away; a shuttle bus operates from Tokyo Station (one stop on the Yamanote line) for around 1000 JPY. The immediate area is packed with restaurants, convenience stores (Family Mart and 7-Eleven within two minutes), and the lively Ameyoko shopping street. Ueno Park, with its museums, zoo, and Shinobazu Pond, is within a 10-minute walk. The neighbourhood is vibrant and well-connected, and most major Tokyo destinations - Asakusa, Akihabara, Shibuya, Shinjuku - are accessible without a transfer.

The breakfast buffet is a mix of Japanese dishes (rice, miso soup, fish, pickles) and a few Western items (scrambled eggs, sausages, bread, cereal). The space is small - about 19 seats - and can become crowded, requiring a wait during peak times. The quality is described as acceptable but not extensive, and the coffee is basic. The restaurant, which operates as an izakaya in the evening (15:00-23:00 on weekdays, 12:00-23:00 on weekends, closing at 21:00 on Sunday), serves Asian cuisine for lunch and dinner. For those who prefer more variety, the surrounding area offers dozens of dining options within a 3-minute walk, including ramen, yakitori, sushi, and international choices along Ameyoko street.

The onsen facility on the top floor is one of the hotel's main draws. It offers both an indoor bath and an open-air bath (rotenburo), both free for guests. The TV in the room shows real-time occupancy so you can choose a quieter time. Towels and basic amenities are provided. To use the onsen, guests with tattoos must cover them with two seals (10 cm x 12 cm each), available free at reception. The facility is popular in the evenings, especially after a day of walking, and can get busy, but the alternating schedules (morning and evening) allow for planning a quieter visit.

The hotel is largely automated: check-in and check-out are handled through self-service kiosks in the lobby, and staff are on hand to assist if issues arise. Luggage storage is available on the day of check-in and the day of check-out, but the hotel cannot hold bags for guests who leave and return later. A luggage scale is available for travellers needing to weigh bags before flights. Coin laundry is on the 1st floor (4 washers and 4 dryers, 500 JPY/30 min for wash, 100 JPY/30 min for dry), and a coin changer is next to the machines. The hotel can accept and send luggage via Yu-Pack domestic delivery service. Wi-Fi is free and each room has a dedicated, secure connection that is fast enough for video streaming. Other services include express check-in/out, currency exchange, and a vending machine for drinks. The property is wheelchair accessible, with lifts and grab rails in bathrooms, and has braille signage. The three elevators can be slow during peak hours (breakfast, checkout).
