Hotel Details

Location

Kinlay House sits on Dame Street, a half-block from Christ Church Cathedral and the edge of Temple Bar, with all main sights reachable on foot.
The hostel is within a 5-minute walk of Dublin Castle, St Patrick's Cathedral, and the lively Temple Bar district. The direct airport bus (route 747/757) stops right outside, taking about 40 minutes and costing €7. Multiple restaurants, pubs, and shops cluster on the same street, including Leo Burdock's fish and chips and Darkey Kelly's pub. The Luas tram line is a 10-minute walk away. The area feels safe and is consistently busy, but road-facing rooms experience traffic noise throughout the night.

Accommodation

Dormitories (4-24 beds) and a few private single/twin/quad rooms, many with shared bathrooms; some dorms have en-suite showers.
Room sizes vary from compact 10 m2 singles to spacious 20 m2 dorms, but most dorms feel tight when full. Bunk beds are metal-framed with comfortable mattresses and thick comforters; some older mattresses show visible wear. A permanent bright green emergency light stays on all night in many rooms - a sleep mask is essential. Walls are thin and the building has little soundproofing, so noise from other rooms, hallways, and traffic is frequent. Rooms lack curtains, bedside lights, and sufficient power outlets; an extension cord is useful for top-bunk sleeping. The building has no lift - rooms on levels 2-4 require multiple staircase climbs, and heavy luggage is a real challenge. Bathrooms are shared (gender-separated or co-ed on some floors) and cleanliness varies widely; en-suite bathrooms in dorms are often cramped and the shower button must be pressed every 15-30 seconds to keep water flowing.

Dining

A free breakfast is served each morning, and the large shared kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering at any other meal.
The included breakfast consists of toast, butter, jam, cereal, yogurt, tea, and coffee - a basic offering that suits budget travellers but not those with gluten-free or dairy-free needs. The kitchen is well-equipped with pots, pans, utensils, and a fridge for storing personal food. The communal lounge and dining area also has a pool table and vending machines for snacks and drinks. The attached pub, Darkey Kelly's, serves food and live music, and the immediate neighbourhood is dense with restaurants and takeaways.

Wellness and Leisure

Organised pub crawls and free walking tours depart from the hostel, and the on-site pub offers live music.
The hostel runs a free walking tour that covers Dublin's main landmarks. Paid pub crawls are available, making it easy to explore the Temple Bar nightlife with a group. For independent downtime, the shared lounge has a pool table and a TV area. There is no on-site pool, spa, or gym, but the city's attractions are all within walking distance.

Facilities and Services

Free Wi-Fi in public areas, 24-hour reception, luggage storage, and a shared kitchen; paid laundry and lockers available.
Wi-Fi is free in common areas but may be weak or unavailable in some dorm rooms, especially at the back of the building. The 24-hour front desk handles check-in/-out, tour bookings, and airport shuttle reservations (€7). Luggage storage costs €12 per day with a €10 deposit returned on key return. Laundry machines are limited and can get busy. A safety deposit box is available for an extra charge. The property is non-smoking throughout, with a designated smoking area outside. The building has no lift and heavy luggage requires climbing multiple flights of stairs - a significant consideration for guests with mobility issues or large bags.

Top Strategic Tips

  • 01

Request a bottom bunk in advance if you have mobility concerns, and confirm the reservation upon arrival.

  • 02

Arrive with a sleep mask and earplugs; many rooms have a permanent bright green emergency light and noise from the street or other guests is common.

  • 03

Use the 24-hour front desk for luggage storage after check-out; lockers are available for a fee (with a deposit returned).

  • 04

Book the airport shuttle or take the green bus from the stop directly outside the hostel for a fast, low-cost transfer.
