RYOKAN ASAKUSA SHIGETSU, Tokyo

The ryokan sits on a quiet side street closed to general traffic during the day, yet is just steps from the bustling Nakamise-dori shopping street and Senso-ji Temple. Asakusa Subway Station (Ginza Line) is a 5-minute walk, providing direct train access to Ueno, Shibuya, and Ginza, as well as Narita and Haneda airports via the airport express service without transfers. Numerous restaurants, convenience stores, and the Hoppy Street izakaya lane are within a 2-minute walk. Despite being in the heart of tourist Asakusa, the location feels calm and retreat-like.

Accommodation options include Japanese-style rooms with 1-4 futons on tatami, Western rooms with single beds, and twin rooms combining beds and futons. All rooms are air-conditioned with heating, a flat-screen satellite TV, refrigerator, electric kettle, safe deposit box, hairdryer, yukata robes, and complimentary mineral water and tea. Private bathrooms are equipped with a bath, shower, bidet, and toiletries. City views are available from many rooms, and some rooms offer views of Senso-ji Temple and the Skytree. Note that north-facing rooms will lose temple views from autumn 2026 due to nearby construction, but the temple remains a 5-minute walk away. Rooms are spacious enough for luggage and sleeping futons, and daily cleaning is provided.

The ryokan does not serve meals, but guests can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks in the lounge at any time. The immediate surroundings are packed with restaurants ranging from tempura (Daikokuya), ramen (Ramen Yoroiya), and sushi (Sushi Zammai) to izakaya and bars (Kamiya Bar), all within 0.3-0.5 km. The Hoppy Street, a street lined with izakaya, is a 2-minute walk away. For those who want to prepare their own food, microwaves and electric kettles are available in the lounge.

The 6th-floor onsen is a highlight, providing a traditional Japanese bathing experience with a Hinoki cypress bath. Gender-separated baths rotate between morning and evening, so using both time slots allows you to enjoy views of the Senso-ji Five-storied Pagoda from one bath and the Tokyo Skytree from the other. Tattoos are permitted. The onsen is public and cannot be reserved privately. A Zen-style rooftop garden on the same floor offers panoramic city views. The onsen tends to be popular, so planning visits outside peak hours may provide a quieter experience.

Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi is available in all areas. Daily housekeeping is included, with the option to skip cleaning by using a door tag. Luggage storage before check-in and after check-out is offered free of charge, and the staff can assist with sending luggage via Yamato transport to your next destination. There is no on-site parking. A lift serves all floors. Safety features include CCTV, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and a safety deposit box in each room.
