HAYMARKET HOSTEL, Edinburgh

The hostel is located in the city centre, 5 minutes on foot from the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and less than 1 km from Edinburgh Castle. The Royal Mile, National Museum of Scotland and Princes Street are all within a 20-minute walk or a short tram/bus ride. Air connectivity is excellent: the 100 airport bus stops within 100 metres and costs £8 return, while the tram stops just across the road. Haymarket train station provides direct links to Glasgow and the rest of Scotland. A 24-hour convenience store is directly opposite, and over a dozen restaurants, bars and supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl) are within a 3-minute walk.

Dormitories range from 6 to 12 beds (including 6-bed and 9-bed female dorms and 9-bed/12-bed mixed rooms). Triple-level bunks are common - those on the middle and top tiers can be difficult to access and may feel unstable. Each dorm has a private bathroom (toilet and shower) and additional shared bathrooms are located on other floors. Rooms are basic: the only storage is a narrow shelf and a small locker (handbag-sized only). There are no curtains on bunks, no individual reading lights and no desk or seating inside the room. In warmer months rooms can become stuffy and humid due to limited ventilation and no air conditioning; opening windows may allow street noise from trams. Bedding is provided and the mattress comfort is generally acceptable, though thin mattresses are reported in some dorms. For greater privacy and convenience, rooms with an en-suite or a smaller capacity are preferable.

The hostel does not operate its own restaurant or kitchen for guest cooking, but a basic shared kitchen provides a microwave, kettle and fridge for reheating food and simple preparation. The on-site Garner Shop (reception) sells grab-and-go items including croissants, fruit, yoghurts and hot drinks at affordable prices. Free 24/7 ground coffee, tea and biscuits are available in the common kitchen and reception area. Over 10 restaurants (Indian, Chinese, Japanese, pub food) are within a 3-minute walk on the same street, offering a range of cuisines and price points. No self-catering hot plates or full cookware are provided.

The hostel has a shared lounge/TV area and a common kitchen with free hot drinks. Luggage can be stored in a monitored open area before check-in and after check-out at no charge. A paid airport shuttle (additional charge) can be arranged, and public transport tickets are sold on site. CCTV operates in common areas and outside the property, and fire extinguishers and smoke alarms are fitted. The property is non-smoking throughout and offers heating in all rooms. Reception is attended 24/7, providing keycards or app-based door access. There is no lift in all parts of the building - some rooms require climbing stairs.
